The Routemaster Bus carried Londoners between 1956 and 2005, a total of 2,876 being built. Each bus had a capacity of 64 passengers, and was operated by a driver in the cabin and a bus conductor, who sold tickets and generally helped out. Smoking was permitted on the top deck of London buses until 2007. The bus fare at the beginning of the 70s was 3 new pence.
